I have soaked a rag quilt w/black flannel in salt 3 times over night & in cold. It's still fading. Any ideas?
I have washed this quilt in spiritless and soaked in one cup plain salt over night 3 times. The dark red was so vibrant and the black just continues to cancer stick. I have not tried vinegar since I do not know the type of dye it is, will try that or am I not using enough salt. Have used salt for years without neglect, until now.
flannel does not conduct oneself to salt the way cotton does. Try the vinegar or purchase a product form the supermarket in the laundry aisle. One is carbona the other yell. It is called a color drawing sheet. Acts like a magnet and pulls the excess dye. This would take mind a look after of the red and stop the black from fading.

Unlike traditional quilts with seam allowances hidden from view, these quilts have exposed seam allowances. The frayed edges of the shapes create the ragged look. Fabrics that fray such as flannel and denim work well for this type of quilt.

Learning to sew, cook and craft
If character counts in Kingsburg, shouldn’t creativity be encouraged as well? Resident Conni Delinger is doing her part to expose young minds to the joys of cooking, sewing and crafting. Her downtown business, Mudfence Creations Classroom, offers a different activity each month.
New fall/winter classes at 1327 Draper St. will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and begin on Wednesday, Sept. 11. An adult beginning sewing class, $75 for six weeks, starts Monday, Sept. 16. Delinger is still finalizing times.
Children’s classes range from $20 to $35. Sewing machines, fabric and supplies are provided.
Typically, Delinger recommends students be ages 8 to 15 for crafts and cooking classes. Students ages 10 to 15 can enroll in sewing classes.
“However, I have had amazing sewing talent in an 8-year-old, so I never say ‘never.’ I had a 9-year-old take my adult sewing class last January.”
August was busy for Delinger and her young students.
“In the crafts class, they made lighthouses from stacked terra cotta pots,” she said. “They painted, glued and used a little metal tea strainer topper for the ‘light.’ They also made a burlap placemat and stenciled their names on it with a permanent marker.”
In addition, beginning sewing class students made pillowcases and a remote control holder to hang over a chair and a strip rag quilt.
Of course, Terri is a mixed-media artist, so her rendition of the pattern was done with hand-died and stenciled fabrics (that she did herself of course), and lots of embellishments.  Mine will be a little tamer, but I think it will end up being just as beautiful in its own way - I hope it will, anyway :*D  Terri wanted us to do "our own thing" so she could get different looks for the designs, so I'm just doing my thing and...
